Once your adult teeth appear, you don’t grown any new teeth, so it’s essential to take best care of them.
Regular check-ups allow your dentist to to check for any dental and oral problems.
Leaving problems untreated makes them more difficult to treat in the future, so it's best to deal with problems early or, if possible, prevent them altogether.
Plaque, tartar and stains can quickly build up between visits if your teeth care regime isn’t kept up to a good standard.
We like to think of it as "the three P's" - Preventing, protecting, proactive.

Your dentist will carry out a full examination of your mouth, teeth and gums to assess your dental and oral health, not just for signs of problems with the teeth and gums but also for more serious conditions such as oral cancers, diabetes and vitamin deficiencies.
You’ll be asked about your general health and any problems you have had with your teeth, mouth or gums since your last visit. Whether or not you’re a regular patient at Farleigh Dental, this helps us to quickly identify and treat any new concerns you may have about your dental and oral health.
We ask our patients about their teeth-cleaning habits and give advice on the most appropriate ways to keep the mouth, teeth and gums healthy.

Your dentist will explain any recommended treatment, any perceived risks, as well as the costs, of all you may need to maintain your oral and dental health, along with any issues identified during your check-up.
We’ll discuss with you when your next visit should be, with regular checkups most commonly recommended every 6 months. If you’re lucky enough to have a good standard of dental health, you may not need to be seen as often.

Early warnings can save lives. Did you know, when you go for your regular dental check up, your dentist and hygienist are also screening you for any signs of oral cancer, and even signs of diabetes and vitamin deficiency?
Oral cancers are serious and affect the mouth, lips or throat, but are often treatable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages.
Visiting your dentist for regular check ups and avoiding tobacco are the key factors in preventing oral cancer. Tooth decay, gum disease and poor dental hygiene can also contribute to and worsen many other conditions such as heart disease.

When should I book in?
For optimal health of your teeth and gums, we recommend that our patients have a routine checkup between 6 and 18 months from their last routine appointment. If you've got good dental condition, we'll recommend a longer wait until your next appointment. Our team will discuss this with you after your checkup. If it's been more than the time we recommended since your last checkup and you haven't got your next one booked yet, contact us to arrange it at a time that suits you.

Prevention is always better
Attending your dental appointments should be an essential part of your dental care, but you can take care of your teeth and gums between appointments with some simple steps at home:
- Brush your teeth twice a day. We recommend you spend at least two minutes on your brushing.
- Consider an electric toothbrush, you'll definitely notice a difference and they don't have to cost a fortune.
- Replace your toothbrush if it starts to look worn or frayed, or after three months. Change the head if it's an electric toothbrush.
- Always use a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste is one of the most effective ways of preventing tooth decay and cavities.
- Don't use a mouthwash right after you have brushed your teeth - it will wash off the fluoride from your toothpaste, even if the mouthwash has fluoride in it too.
